Welcome New Teachers!!
In our last issue we forgot to mention the addition of all the new teachers. So a big WELCOME to those brave souls who have arrived over the last couple of months - Rosemary Esber, Glenn Hough, John Lanteigne, Lorrein Lanteigne, Reeves Chase, William Stein, Naomi Rusoe, Michael Sullivan, Fabio Mazzarella, and Steven Minervino Write down your thoughts and experiences of life in Moscow, polish them up and send them in for February's issue. And send in your questions about work and life, your announcements, or what have you, to Unbound for publication. We hope that the information provided will make things a bit easier for you, or at least entertain you for a while on that 1.5 hour metro ride!
Tverskaya Report
Here's hoping you all had a good Christmas and New Year break and welcome to all the new teachers we have (including another Michael!) As you probably know, I'm taking over the ADOS job here at Tverskaya and I'd like to thank all the teachers and staff for their help and patience while I've been finding my way around. Our best wishes go with Diane and her job hunting in S. America. New books in are "Phrasal Verbs and Idioms" (part of the Making Headway series) at both Upper-Intermediate and Advanced levels while out from the display cabinet goes the offensively titled "Ten Little Niggers" (and about time too). On the negative side, yet more books have gone missing from resources taking the total up to around 20 over the past few months. So, unfortunately a sign-out system is now in operation in the Resources room. Cheers until next month.

Kropotkinskaya Report
Happy New Year everyone! And welcome to the new additions to the teaching staff at Kropotkinskaya - John Lanteigne and Naomi Rusoe. I hope everyone is refreshed from the holidays and back in the swing again - daylight is increasing every day! Several books have arrived in the last month, including Read All About it 2, Small Talk Jazz Chants (well worth having a look at it - it has a chant cassette and exercises for every unit), Passages 1 & 2 (Upper-intermediate to Low-Advanced level course books), Knockout FCE (easier than usual material for weaker students), and Countdown to FCE (for teenage Upper-intermediate students who will probably take an FCE prep course in the future - a possible alternative to High Flyer Upper-Intermediate). The computer is working well, with English programs and Internet access.
The administration requests, once again, that teachers leave their registers in the appropriate location, and fill them out properly. If you haven't seen me around, it's because I'm in Canada on holiday - snowboarding, hockey, and other stuff! My return date is February 1st, so if you have any teaching questions ask another Ados or one of the many experienced teachers here at Kropot. Good luck, and don't steal anything while I'm gone.

Little Money for Little People
|
Christmas is the time of year when we all think about giving. We give presents to our family and friends and we also remember others that are not as fortunate as we. Last week while I was in talking to Oxana she mentioned that the school was collecting presents for children at one of the many orphanages of Moscow.
I thought this was a wonderful idea. After all, we all want our children to be happy at Christmas. But what happens to these children during the remainder of the year? In Moscow, as in other parts of the world, there are many thousands of children without parents, food or clothes. Couldn't something be done to help these less fortunate little people on an ongoing basis?
Every day in Moscow we come in possession of coins that have little value. These coins, once taken out of our pockets, find there way into jars, on top of dressers and in kitchen drawers.
My proposal is to set up a program called "Little Money for Little People" where these coins will be collected and given to an orphanage. Jars or boxes could be placed in teachers and staff lounges and beside the cashier where we receive our pay. Monthly or bi-monthly this money would then be collected from the various locations in the schools and given to a particular institution on behalf of the teachers and staff of BKC.
I have talked to Michael Bonderov, Wayne Rimmer, Dennis Carr and several teachers at Borovitskaya and they all think it is a good idea. If anyone has any comments or suggestions as how to best implement this plan, please contact me at Borovitskaya.
